Watsons Athletic Club is a member of A.S. Watson Group. As a means of reciprocating the public's trust, A.S. Watson Group has continually sponsored and supported local athletic events, contributing enormously to its growth and development. In order to promote Hong Kong's track and field events in an organised manner, A.S. Watson Group founded the Watsons Athletic Club in 1989, which is currently a member of the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association as well as the Community Sports Club of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Its objectives are to promote the well being of local youth through participation in sports, especially in track and field; to uplift the standard of Hong Kong athletes through local and overseas training programmes; and to help nurture local athletic talents in pursuit of sporting excellence.
WAC now has around 600 members, consisting more than 60% of youth athletes. The Club started watsons Junior Elite Training Programme in 2001 and has successfully nurtured more than 200 outperforming junior athletes since then. The Club organises track and field training programmes for primary and secondary school students during the summer months of July and August every year. It is one of the largest and most prestigious summer athletic programs in Hong Kong and has always been well received by schools and parents. The Club has also found and trained more than 50 distinguished juniors from the All Hong Kong Inter-District Primary Schools Athletics Competitions. WAC often holds Athletic Demonstration Programmes at school grounds and during schools' "Sports Day" , when its accomplished athletes demonstrate proper postures for different events and share their experiences with other youngsters.
WAC concerns the all-round development of members by regularly meeting their parents and monitoring academic performance and conduct in their school. The Club regularly holds seminars regarding promotion to secondary education and recommends members to schools. The support from the community and education institutes allows WAC member further develop their potentials in an ideal learning environment.
Since it establishment, WAC has successfully nurtured a number of brilliant athletic stars including Chan Man Yee, Hong Kong Record holder of Women's 1,500m, 3,000m, 5,000m, mile, 10km, Half-marathon and Marathon; Leung Tat Wai, Hong Kong Record holder of Men's 400m and 800m; Tang Hon Sing, Hong Kong Record holder of Men's 110m Hurdles and 400m Hurdles; Li Chi Wo, top Triathlon athlete, and Chang Yu Ho, Hong Kong Record holder of Men's High Jump and Decathlon. Many of the Club's athletes have represented Hong Kong in overseas events, expanding local athletic development to international levels.
